Flamenco
Some time ago, I walked into a dance academy in Cádiz, Spain, armed with a notebook, keen to observe Flamenco dance and make pictures. I thought it might be helpful to learn how to dance first.. to inform my work and so studied Flamenco dance intensively at this academy (de Maria Victoria Guiterrez), then later in Granada with Ana Pintado and Astrid Martin. In Cádiz, after dancing, I often sat and made drawings of the dancers who arrived later. 20 years on, I am still passionate about Flamenco dance and music + I have also enjoyed organising several concerts, along with Art events featuring musicians and dancers from Andalusia. Exploration of this passion continues and when my brush is down, I research, choregraph and teach Flamenco dance, enjoying it immensely. As well as informing, it also inspires my work... life. I feel privileged to have been a spectator and part of richly diverse Art communities. Here you can see artworks in response to many of the fabulous musicians and dancers I have met on my Flamenco journey. There are also photos in relation to some of the concerts I have arranged, courtesy of photographer Ben Kirk-Emes.
